Films for a Changing World: Hummingbirds
Haymarket Books is proud to present the first installment in our community film series: Films for a Changing World. We envision this community film series to be a place for people to come together in community during this volatile political moment. In times like these, our struggle to change the world can feel even more difficult to sustain and we hope these events will be a space to share a collective cultural experience and connect with one another.
Join us Thursday, September 18th at 6 PM for a screening of Estefanía Contreras and Silvia Del Carmen Castaños' 2023 documentary, Hummingbirds. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Palenque LSNA. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to supporting the work of Palenque LSNA and refreshments will be served.
More about the film:
In Hummingbirds, Silvia and Beba tell their own coming-of-age story, transforming their hometown on the Texas-Mexico border into a wonderland of creative expression and activist hijinks. Filmed collaboratively over the final summer of their fleeting youth, their cinematic self-portrait celebrates the power of friendship and joy as tools of survival and resistance.
