An Independent Guåhan: Indigenous Resistance and Self-Determination in the Face of US Imperialism

Michael Lujan Bevacqua, Monaeka Flores, Aren Quenga Kerr and Nathan Samayo speak in this session recorded at Socialism 2024. This session was sponsored by DSA. Guåhan (Guam), with its remote location in the Pacific and modest population of less than 170,000, is frequently neglected in discussions about US imperialism and decolonization. Despite this, the Chamoru people have resisted Western imperialism since Spanish colonization 400 years ago. Today, as an unincorporated territory of the US, the island is exploited by the military as the 'tip of the spear' in ongoing posturing with China. This panel will focus on the growing self-determination movement on Guåhan, driven by the urgent need to protect the island's cultural heritage and fragile ecosystem from catastrophic damage wrought by US imperialism. Antisemitism is Our Business: The ADL and Israel's Defenders

Jason Farbman speaks in this session recorded at Socialism 2024. This session was sponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace and Adalah Justice Project. Two things are true: the Anti-Defamation League weaponizes accusations of antisemitism to defend Israel’s genocide; and we must make a real fight against antisemitism a part of a struggle for collective liberation. Demilitarization and Climate Justice: Winning a Just Transition to a Peace Economy

Patrick Bigger, Khem Rogaly, Jessie Kelly, and Sumaya Awad speak in this session recorded at Socialism 2024. This session was sponsored by Climate and Community Institute. Military domination of public resources and capture of US industrial capacity fuels the climate crisis and fundamentally puts full decarbonization – let alone climate justice – out of reach. To confront the drivers of climate breakdown is also to confront the drivers of militarism, perpetual war, and climate apartheid. Join us to discuss pathways, historical examples, and ongoing organizing for a just transition for the military industrial complex and communities harmed by US imperialism, from Palestine to Cop City. Revisiting the 1960s: Lessons for the Left

Billy Che Brooks, Jacqueline Lazu, and Helen Shiller speak in this session recorded at Socialism 2024. This session was sponsored by With pro-Palestinian protests on campuses continuing to grow, comparisons with the student protests of the 1960s abound. In the late 1960s the Black Panther Party and the Young Lords, with an international, intercommunal perspective, challenged the powers that be and organized a peoples’ response to capitalism while defending against fascism. What are the lessons learned that are relevant to today? The next Socialism Conference will be held in Chicago, July 3-6. Learn more about the Socialism Conference at www.socialismconference.org.
