Beyond Thoughts and Prayers: Socialist Solutions to the Gun Crisis

Danny Katch speaks in this session recorded at Socialism 2022. Gun violence–from mass shootings to homicides to suicides–is on the rise, worsening an ongoing crisis and feuling a “law and order” backlash. This meeting will lay out how socialists can reject the failed “good guys vs bad guys” framework of both the NRA and police departments–and respond to the sometimes conflicting demands of public safety, decriminalization, non-violence, and self-defense. The Gaza Genocide in Context: Histories and Futures of Palestinian Liberation

Abdel Razzaq Takriti speak in this session recorded at Socialism 2024. During the 1948 Nakba, most of southern Palestine was ethnically cleansed by settler-colonist militias. Many refugees ended up in Gaza, playing a key role in the development of Palestinian revolutionary thought and practice. This talk examines the centrality of Gaza to Palestinian liberation, as well as the repeated settler-colonial attempts to attack, besiege and, ultimately, to destroy it. Placing the genocide in historical context, it also reflects on future emancipatory prospects and the role of international solidarity. An Independent Guåhan: Indigenous Resistance and Self-Determination in the Face of US Imperialism

Michael Lujan Bevacqua, Monaeka Flores, Aren Quenga Kerr and Nathan Samayo speak in this session recorded at Socialism 2024. This session was sponsored by DSA. Guåhan (Guam), with its remote location in the Pacific and modest population of less than 170,000, is frequently neglected in discussions about US imperialism and decolonization. Despite this, the Chamoru people have resisted Western imperialism since Spanish colonization 400 years ago. Today, as an unincorporated territory of the US, the island is exploited by the military as the 'tip of the spear' in ongoing posturing with China. This panel will focus on the growing self-determination movement on Guåhan, driven by the urgent need to protect the island's cultural heritage and fragile ecosystem from catastrophic damage wrought by US imperialism.
